Petit Bot – Guernsey

I recently did some commercial drone flying at one of our fabulous South Coast bays in Guernsey and then produced from an image some drone products; coasters, greeting cards, key rings and fridge magnets.

I am delighted that the kiosk is now selling these – let’s hope we have a fantastic summer with lots of visiting tourists.

Drone talk with the Guernsey Trefoil Guild

On the 15 April 2025 I did a drone talk with the Guernsey Trefoil Guild. This was extremely well attended, and the ladies showed a huge amount of interest.

During this presentation I covered the drone rules in the Channel Islands, the UK and Europe and explained what you need to do to fly a drone commercially. Unfortunately, the weather was just not good enough to do a short drone flight, but we have pencilled in a date in the future to do this.

In addition to the drone talk, I took a long with me some drone coasters and greeting cards which were a popular purchase.

I thoroughly enjoy doing informal talks like this – a little humour and some ‘drone stories’ added to an enjoyable couple of hours.

Drone Talk at The Guernsey Yacht Club

On Wednesday evening, 8th January 2025 I did a drone talk at the Guernsey Yacht Club in Guernsey.

This was a member only event and was well attended.

The talk covered the drone safety kit and showing members the two main drones that I use. In addition, I covered the rules and regulations for flying a drone in Guernsey, the UK and in Europe. It should be noted that the drone rules in the Channel Islands do differ considerably to the UK and these can be found on our airport website at the following link: –

Year End Update – 2024

What a year 2024 has been – the busiest year to date with some incredible projects undertaken.

Commercial.

I continue to be the drone pilot for La Grande Mare development, and this year we have seen significant progress on the Golf Course and the new Country Club. It is a real pleasure to be involved in this project and to work alongside all their business professionals. We have seen some massive progress at the new quarry at Chouet, being able to capture the first ‘blast’ in October. Drone surveys are done on a weekly basis for the client.

2024 was also a year to work alongside two estate agents, one in Guernsey and the other in Alderney.

Personal.

It has been a real pleasure to be working with The National Trust of Guernsey this year, and to have been allowed by The Director of Civil Aviation to drone the annual event, Le Viaėr Marchi (congested event). We were extremely lucky to have good weather and as always, this attracted a huge turnout of people, both locals and visitors. What a day, and the drone footage can be seen at this link.

The West Show took place in August this year. As well as having my ‘drone desk’ – selling merchandise, it was a pleasure to fly the drone for the committee to capture some superb footage from the air. Thanks again to The Director of Civil Aviation for allowing me to fly at a large, congested event!

Weddings.

To drone a wedding requires some detailed planning, not to mention to keep your fingers crossed for good weather on the day. Beach weddings have been popular in 2024 and thanks to those customers who have chosen my business to capture their special day with the drone. I look forward to doing more weddings in 2025 where a number of bookings are already in the diary!

Markets.

This is not only a good source of drone business, but an opportunity to meet both local and visiting folk and sell my products. In 2024 we saw the launch of the first market at Earlswood Garden Centre. Held approximately monthly, us stall holders have formed a lovely working relationship and the market itself has proved to be very popular.

In September 2024, as well as selling canvas prints, I took the decision to sell other products such as coasters, key rings, fridge magnets, greeting cards and 2025 drone calendars. I did not anticipate that these items would prove to be extremely popular – I have lost count of numbers of sales, but from September to the end of December 2024 I have sold over 1,200 coasters and 150+ calendars.

2024 was unprecedented with personal commissions, mainly on residential properties where the customer has commissioned me to take an aerial photo to be transferred onto a canvas print. There have been several projects which have carried on for months; demolition and rebuild of properties using the drone and Time-lapse cameras.

Retail.

Thanks for the continued support of The Guernsey Information Centre, Visitor Information Supervisor, Edward Mann for allowing me to exclusively sell my drone products in the centre. In 2024, following a visit to Alderney, I also now sell exclusively my Alderney drone products in Sew Much Fun. Sales there this year have been terrific, especially with coasters, place mats and 2025 Alderney drone calendars.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in 2024 and look forward to another successful year in 2025.

All my best,

Fred

Working with Brooks Macdonald International

Brooks Macdonald International (https://www.brooksmacdonald.com) have moved offices.

This was an exciting project, working with the Guernsey office of Brooks Macdonald to provide bespoke canvas prints for their new offices in St. Peter Port. The team and I worked with a large template to decide the size and choice of pictures to be used for all the rooms in their new office.

Both BM and I were absolutely delighted with the finished result.

Business February 2023 update

Having done a desk job in finance and compliance, I never thought that one day I would be running my own small business.

I really started the drone business after receiving requests from folk wanting to purchase prints – and to ‘make a financial gain’, you need to have the necessary qualifications and an Aerial Work Permit in place – from the Director of Civil Aviation in Guernsey.

As well as the drone flying, there is a fair amount of marketing and administration going on in the background. Risk Assessments and Flight Plans need to be done and approved and permissions need to be obtained from third parties and so on. Flight logs need to be kept up to date, and essential data needs to be backed up on a regular basis.

What started off as just selling prints has developed into almost a full-time job doing various large projects in the construction business and media industry. In addition, I very much enjoy attending the various markets in Guernsey and meeting up other stall holders.

January 2023 was busy, and already, February is looking even better – not bad for the Guernsey winter months. January saw the start of a new construction project and a project working with a finance company to provide canvas prints for their Guernsey office.

As well as flying the drone, Time-lapse work is becoming very popular on various building projects – imagine a five-minute video showing a building being demolished – it’s very effective.

I can honestly say that every time I start up the drone – there is some excitement in what you are going to see from the air and what the footage will look like when I get home to the MacBook.

There have been mistakes, but I have learnt from them, and changed my business model accordingly.

Thanks for your support.

Fred
